Choosing An Air Compressor For A Body Shop Or Garage
One of the most vital tools in your shop is your air compressor. With so many catalogs and vendors offering so many choices, what should you choose ? First of all determine your cfm requirement. You can look up the cfm of most all of your tools online. Find your largest air user and size your compressor to handle this usage with some extra buffer for air leakage and the possibility that other air sources that you may have in the future. Be sure that if you have real air hogs like sand blasting machinery that you purchase the largest possible air receiver. This will prevent your compressor from short cycling and will keep you from burning up your compressor. Additionally if you are purchasing a reciprocating compressor (piston comrpessor), then it is best to oversize the compressor by at least 50% more than your requirement, since many piston compressors are not made to handle constant running requirements. By sizing your compressor and receiver a little larger, you may pay a little extra on the front end, but a compressor that is able to rest more will last longer. And buy a little extra oil when you purchase you compressor for topping off your oil sump and never put standard gear oil in the compressor, or you may be in the market for a new compressor.
